Cold and flu season is still going strong!

You’ve woken up and you feel exhausted with a headache and sore throat. You had planned to go for a long ride this morning, but are not sure if you should push through or rest.

It's always a bummer to be sidelined when you are not feeling well, but is it ok to exercise when you are sick?

Of course there is no easy answer and it always depends on each individual. There is nothing wrong with taking some time to allow your body to rest when you are feeling sick. Sometimes you need to listen to your body and prioritize rest. If you are feeling overly fatigued, then it is probably a sign to take a day off from physical activity.

Although you shouldn’t be doing a hard training ride when you are sick, there are definitely some benefits to doing moderate exercise when you are under the weather.

When It Is Ok To Exercise

When you are experiencing symptoms that are “above the neck”, such as nasal congestion, it is fine to do light to moderate exercise. Consider reducing the intensity and length of your workout. In fact, as long as it isn’t too strenuous, exercise such as walking or light jogging can actually boost your immune system. However, it is very important to listen to your body so that you do not add any unnecessary stress, which may delay your recovery.

When Not To Exercise

It is not a good idea to exercise when you exhibit symptoms that are "below the neck," such as chest congestion, coughing or nausea. Instead, take a rest day to allow your body to recover. Taking a few days or a week off exercise to allow your body to recover will have no negative impact on your fitness.

Also, keep in mind that if you are sick, don’t go to the gym or studio to help prevent the spread of the cold or flu.
