Causes of Low Back Pain
Low back pain is a very common issue among the general population and that’s because there can be many causes. It can manifest itself as a chronic injury that has slowly gotten worse over time from repeated stress or overuse. This form of back pain is often linked to age related degeneration or diseases such as osteoporosis or arthritis. It can also be a result of poor posture and muscle function. Sitting for many hours day after day can wreak havoc on your body in general, not to mention your back and hips.
Low back pain can also be a result of a sudden acute injury such as a muscle strain from a sudden movement (like lifting something heavy) or trauma from a sports injury. These types of injuries usually last anywhere from a few weeks to a few months.
Symptoms of Low Back Pain
Low back pain symptoms can range from mild to severe and can manifest itself in many different ways. Some of the more obvious symptoms include dull aching pain as well as sharp pain, especially when moving. You may also feel muscle spasms or stiffness.
Symptoms can range significantly depending on the underlying cause. Other symptoms of low back pain may include:
Pain that may radiate down the legs (sciatica)
Muscle weakness
Loss of range of motion
It is also important to note that pain may radiate into the buttocks, hips, or legs.
Treating Low Back Pain with Physiotherapy
As mentioned, physiotherapists have a plethora of tools and techniques to help not only manage the pain and discomfort caused by low back pain, but also to address the root cause of the issue. Some of these treatment techniques include manual therapy, which is a hands on approach that improves mobility and range of motion.
Physiotherapists are also able to provide a personalized treatment plan based on your individual needs and the nature of the injury. Such as prescriptive exercises that will address any muscle and movement dysfunctions.
Lastly, they have the ability to utilize instrument assisted treatment such as abrasion tools to increase blood flow and improve healing time.
